August 2016. Launch of MATTERLING, a newly founded independent M&A boutique specialized on transactions in the food and drink sector in Europe.
The founding partners of MATTERLING are Rudi Strittmatter, former head of M&A at Rabobank, and Adrian Fröhling, former managing director at corporate finance boutique Pericap and M&A banker at UBS and RBS (former ABN AMRO). Rudi has over 30 years’ experience in corporate finance advisory with a rigorous focus on European food and drink transactions. He has been involved in a large number of deals and worked with many reputable strategic and private equity clients in his career. Adrian has over 14 years’ experience in corporate finance advisory of which around 5 years dedicated to the food and drink and consumer related sectors. Among others, he has advised on a number of recent growth capital deals in the German food space, such as for Veganz, Berlin, a leading growth company for branded vegan foods in Europe, or mymuesli, Passau, the leading multi-channel brand of organic premium mueslis in the German-speaking region.
M&A activity in the European food and drink industry is very robust – being driven primarily by the changing tastes of millennials, on the brink of becoming the largest segment of the population, who are shunning processed food in favor of natural, healthier and more local products. Innovative small companies with authentic brands have been emerging and are seizing market share from the larger packaged goods companies that have been slow to adapt. This makes younger companies highly sought after by larger food companies that see early-stage M&A as a smart strategy for gaining access to faster-growing revenue streams in the grocery aisles. Hence, this sector is going through a major disruption, requiring winning concepts to balance growth and authenticity.
